Keswick Hunt members are encouraged to come and enjoy this beautiful event, which has a proud history. Shortly after World War II, a group of Virginia Foxhunters decided to hold a hunter trial for horses that had been hunted regularly for the past season, representing each hunt in the Commonwealth.  The Master from each hunt nominated two horses and riders to represent their hunt in a class called The Virginia Field Hunter Championship.

The first championship was held at Farmington Hunt Club, where Truman Dodson and James “Jimps” Blackwell were the organizers. “Jimps” served as the first Field Master of the competition, which was a course laid out similar to hunting conditions. The tradition was established at that first event that the winner would host and be Field Master the following year. The event was a huge success and has been held every year since 1950.  The Keswick Hunt Club has been fortunate enough to win the Hunter Championship seven times.  It was won twice by Mrs. W.H. Perry, twice by Alexander Rives, once by his son Sandy Rives and twice by Will Coleman, who will be hosting this year’s event and acting as field master.
